What are mouth guards for sleeping?

A mouth guard comes as a preventative measure to prevent any future dental problems and protect your jaw from any damage. Our cosmetic dentists will work to provide you with a custom-made mouth guard that perfectly fits your teeth with the ability to open your mouth without any stiffness or pain.

At Trident, you additionally get to enjoy an exclusive pain-free, stress-free and tear-free customized treatment.

People who suffer from bruxism, which is teeth grinding, are the ones who generally benefit from a mouth guard the most. Also, some contact sports such as Hockey or Football require athletes to wear mouth guards to reduce the risk of face injury.

What are the causes of bruxism?

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Crooked teeth
  • Or, it could simply be a habit

What to expect during your first visit?

During your first visit, a Sunnyvale dentist will take the impression of your teeth and assess your bite to be able to provide you with the appropriate night guard for you.

During your next visit, your custom-made night guard will be ready. Your orthodontist will help you place it and will make sure that it fits properly. If everything looks good, we’ll give you some instructions to follow, and that’s it!

FAQs

Dental Emergencies

Do mouth guards help with teeth grinding?

Yes! Mouth guards work on spreading the pressure across your jaw to create a barrier between the upper and lower teeth to avoid teeth grinding. If you are looking for a mouthguard for sleeping, we are the right night guards specialists in Sunnyvale, CA! Book an appointment with us today.

What type of mouth guard is best for clenching?

Soft night guards are usually best for clenching as they’re usually used for non-severe teeth grinding. Come see us for a consultation and get the best  night guard in Sunnyvale, CA.

Can night guards ruin your teeth?

On the contrary, night guards are a preventive care so the enamel avoids tearing down, which may lead to tooth sensitivity or can even result in a cracked tooth.

Should you wear night guards on upper or lower teeth?

It depends! Whether it’s an upper or lower night guard, your teeth will be protected not to affect your natural bite. Your dentist will recommend the best option for you during your first visit.

Should you wear a night guard every night?

Yes! To get the best and fastest results, you should wear your night guard every night.

When can I stop wearing my night guard?

Once the teeth grinding is addressed, you won’t need to wear your night guard anymore. The progress will be monitored by your dentist.

Taking care of your mouthguard

Cleaning

  • Rinse immediately after wearing and let it dry before putting it in a case
  • Use liquid dish detergent or hand soap to clean your appliance. A little mild soap plus warm water will do a great cleaning job. While you’re at it, get a brush just for the appliance — because, while it’s fine for plastic, you don’t want to brush your teeth with soap!
  • Put a towel in the sink basin when you clean your appliance. Soapy appliances (especially dentures) can be slippery, and can be damaged by dropping — and that’s an expensive mishap.
  • Consider investing in an ultrasonic cleaner. These inexpensive countertop devices are an excellent way to get the tiny ridges and crevices of your appliance really clean.

Case

  • Always store your mouthuard in a case. When you are not wearing your guard it is important that you keep it stored in a case. Many people store their guard in their bathroom, but over time the steam and humidity in the bathroom can cause the guard to warp. We recommend that you keep the guard stored in your bedroom or on your nightstand instead. Be careful not to store your guard anywhere subject to extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Cleaning your guard can become a wasted effort if you put a clean night guard into a dirty case. Keep the case clean by hand washing it every few days with regular dishwashing soap or castile soap. Avoid placing the case in the dishwasher as the high temperature may melt or warp the plastic. After washing, allow the case to dry as to prevent bacteria growth.
Call your specialist if...

  • You develop a fever
  • You develop a swelling
  • You notice a pimple forming on your gums
