FAQs

Dental Emergencies

What is Invisalign?

The Invisalign tray system renders a modern straightening method for ultimate orthodontic camouflage to help you get the smile you want, the way you want it. Invisalign aligners are removable, invisible and work to gradually straighten your teeth while preventing orthodontic issues.

What does Invisalign do?

The Invisalign treatment is designed to create a digital plan that maps out the exact movements of your teeth. The clear aligners apply the right amount of force to the right places based on a customized plan  and the treatment’s goals set by you and your doctor.

Invisalign vs braces: What’s the difference?

Unlike braces, no wires and brackets are involved in the process. Invisalign is an innovative alternative to metal braces, offering you lasting results without wires or brackets, but only translucent, flexible plastic and removable clear braces.

Invisalign vs Direct to consumer braces: What’s the difference?

Users of the Direct to consumer braces are responsible to make their own molds and are not monitored by any specialist. Invisalign, on the other hand, is not only a better but also a safer alternative. You get one-on-one attention, an orthodontist that takes X-rays, assesses your bite, how the teeth fit together, looks at previous dental work, and checks the gums' condition, none of them can be done remotely.

Is Invisalign worth getting?

Invisalign is an innovative treatment that gets you the results you want in as little as 6 months, and costs about the same as braces. At Trident Smiles Dental, we provide different financing plans to make your treatment as worthy as possible.

What are my financial options for Invisalign?

During your first visit, we will discuss insurance benefits and recommend the best payment options so you don’t have to worry about any unexpected costs. Our payment plans provide an Invisalign financing plan with monthly installments, different payment options, assistance with dental insurance forms, and we accept a wide range of dental plans and offer company flex plans. You can check all the details here or reach out to us directly.

Is Invisalign bad for your teeth?

The Invisalign aligners cannot damage your teeth if proper instructions are being followed.

Is Invisalign cheaper than braces?

The Invisalign price in Sunnyvale is about the same as traditional braces and is covered by more insurance companies as well as LendingPoint. During your visit, our experts can help you figure out costs and payment plans that work best for you.

Do teeth go yellow with Invisalign?

Smoking while wearing your aligners will surely turn your teeth yellow. Food residue can also affect and stain your teeth. Taking care of your oral hygiene prevents yellowing. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day, floss and to rinse your aligner before using it again.

Does Invisalign ruin your face?

The Invisalign aligners won’t ruin your face. They adjust to the width of your jaw without extending to affect the shape of your face.

Is Invisalign more painful than braces?

Invisalign is not painful. The first few days, patients will have to get used to wearing the aligners which might give you a feeling of discomfort. At Trident Smiles Dental, we confidently provide pain-free, stress-free and tear-free care.

Can you eat with Invisalign?

You can eat all the food you want. Just take your aligners out, then brush your teeth before putting them back in. We don’t recommend eating with the Invisalign aligners to prevent tooth decay.

Fun facts about Invisalign :)
  • The inventor of the Invisalign system had metal braces. As a student at Stanford, Zia Chishti had his braces removed and got a retainer. That’s when it occurred to him that a series of retainers could do the same work as metal braces, but with the benefit of being removable.
  • Straight teeth may improve oral health. Everyone knows that a nice smile is attractive, but it turns out that straight teeth can lead to better oral health overall.
  • Over 1,000,000 patients worldwide have been treated with Invisalign, and the number is increasing on a daily basis.
  • Invisalign braces control both the force and timing of the force application. During each treatment stage, only certain teeth are moved. Your orthodontist determines these movements as they map out your personal treatment plan.
  • Did you know that Invisalign Teens is nearly the same price as traditional braces? Most families don’t and believe that it is the more cost prohibitive option. But the truth is, they are typically similar in price and many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign Teen treatment the same way they cover normal braces.
  • You can eat chips and gummies! In fact, with Invisalign Teens there are absolutely NO food restrictions because you can remove the aligners when you eat, which also makes brushing and flossing your teeth easier.
  • Invisalign braces for teens have a special feature – a blue indicator that fades depending on how much you wear the retainer. They can help us understand if you’re wearing your retainers for the required amount of time or not.

Instructions

General instructions
  • Keep your aligners in as much as possible. Patients should keep their aligners in almost all day during the first 48 hours. This is where they really do a lot of work and help you get used to feeling them.
  • You’ll need to adjust how you speak. When you first put them on, you will have a bit of a lisp. It’s important to prepare yourself for this so it won’t shock you as much when you talk.
  • Remember to floss. With Invisalign, flossing is more important than ever, as you really need to keep your teeth and gums as clean as can be. When you don’t floss, there can be a buildup of food, plaque, and other such things between your teeth.
  • Remember to clean your aligners. Invisalign aligners need to be cleaned every day, just like your teeth. Cleaning them is so easy, you just use your toothbrush and clean them with some toothpaste.
  • The patient can get translucent attachments that can help speed up the results. These are commonly referred to as Invisalign buttons. They can sometimes fall off so the patient should regularly be checking if they are still in place.
  • Scanning may be necessary during or at the end of treatment. This “refinement” is not an indication that something is wrong, but simply the doctor’s way of making adjustments in the treatment.
  • Aligner Removal: On one side of your mouth, use your fingertip on the inside of your back molar to slowly pull the aligner from your molars then walk the aligner out to the front and then the other side to release the aligner. Immediately rinse aligner with water, shake off excess water, and store your aligners in the protective case provided with your starter kit.
Dealing with Invisalign pain and discomfort

Although very rare, pain that needs treatment can sometimes arise during the first few days of your new aligner trays.

  • One of the best ways to get the soreness over with is to wear your Invisalign aligners as much as possible. This allows your teeth to shift sooner, and helps the aligner do its work in the first few days it’s in.
  • Sucking on ice cubes or drinking cold water while your Invisalign aligner is in will help soothe your sore teeth.
  • Since new aligners tend to cause the worst soreness in the first hours, we recommend that our patients put in a new aligner just before bedtime. You’ll be able to sleep through the initial discomfort and make your way through the next day without having to experience the worst discomfort while you’re wide awake.
  • In the first two or three days after getting a new Invisalign aligner, try to eat a diet that primarily consists of soft foods.
  • As a last resort, you can take over-the-counter pain medication if you absolutely have to. We recommend the above advice first since the discomfort is typically manageable for most patients.
Do's and don'ts for food and drinks

Invisalign has almost no food or drink limitations. There are, however, recommendations for keeping your aligners clean and your teeth underneath healthy:

  • Slim down the morning coffee. You won’t be able to sip on your favorite blend all morning long while wearing Invisalign. If you don’t remove the aligners, they can become stained if you drink coffee for too long – any drink or food that can stain your teeth will also stain your aligners in the same way (e.g. curry, bbq...).
  • Learn to love water, because it’s the safest bevarage with no risks of staining your aligners.
  • Build snacks and drinks into your day. Because Invisalign must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day for the treatment to be effective, you’ll have to be a bit speedy about your meals and snacks. You will want to keep tabs on the amount of time that Invisalign is off your teeth while eating so that you don’t go under the 20-hour mark. Unless your Invisalign specialist instructs you to wear it while eating.
  • Say no to gum. Gum is a complete no-no when you’re wearing Invisalign. The stickiness will impair the orthodontic treatment, get stuck to your aligners, and easily damage them because of the gum’s properties and the constant chewing motion.
  • Thoroughly brush and floss your teeth after meals and sugary drinks before putting aligners back in.
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco can cause your teeth to rot in addition to having a negative impact on your overall bodily health and stayining your aligners.
What to do with chipped or cracked aligners

In most cases, having cracks in your Invisalign isn’t a huge cause for concern. If you do notice some damage on the surface, you should take extra care in how you handle them, particularly when you’re putting them in or removing them. A good rule of thumb is to remove the aligners using the side that’s opposite to the crack.

Continue wearing your aligners as directed if you’re able to. If the crack becomes worse, please contact your dentist immediately.

Sharp edges of a retainer

Use a small piece of sandpaper or a nail filer and smoothen out the sharp edges. Use your fingers to make sure that the edges are smooth before wearing them. The way to manage these sharp edges at home is fairly simple but you must be careful in doing so as extra filing may result in the loosening of the retainer.

Staining or discoloration of retainers

While having stained or discolored Invisalign doesn’t necessarily constitute an emergency, it can make you self-conscious and uncomfortable. The discoloration is also a sign that your clear aligners aren’t being cleaned properly or often enough, which can create oral health issues for you if the problem persists.

When bacteria and food particles get trapped and pressed against your teeth and gums, you’re risking developing cavities and halitosis. Clean them properly everyday.

What to do when you lose a tray

Misplacing an Invisalign tray is much more common than you think. If you forget to store your clear aligners in their case, they’re easy to lose track of, accidentally get thrown out, or left behind at a restaurant.

If you do lose one of your trays, you can act quickly to keep yourself and your treatment plan on track. Find your most recent set and wear those until you’re able to book an appointment with your dentist to discuss your options.
