Diet

• You do not need to worry about eating beforehand as you will not be sedated. Have a meal before you come in. The appointment could take longer and you do not want to be hungry during the procedure.

Medication

• Please pickup any medications that are prescribed to you filled by your pharmacy prior to your appointment (If you did not get any prescriptions, please call the office as soon as possible).
• If you are taking any medication, please inform your dentist immediately. If you take prescription medication, take them at your normal times unless otherwise directed by your physician or dentist. DO NOT stop taking any prescription medication unless directed by your physician and dentist.

Oral hygiene

• Please brush your teeth and rinse thoroughly before treatment.
• To decrease the risk of tooth sensitivity, use a desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne Rapid Relief or Colgate Pro-relief a few days before your whitening appointment.

Clothing

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing for the procedure. Your clothes may stain during the procedure so dress accordingly. Wear Flat-soled shoes that support your ankle.

Time

• Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment. Time is set aside specifically to place your procedure. We have reserved enough time to ensure that the operation proceeds smoothly so that the outcome will be successful. If you feel you will have any problem keeping your appointment, please give us as much notice as possible so that we might utilize your time for another patient.

Driver / Caretaker

• Unless you are getting some of your teeth pulled out, you do not need to worry about ride as you will not be sedated.

Smoking

• If you use tobacco or marijuana products, please refrain from using it at the day of the procedure and be prepared to stop for a period afterwards. It is advisable to use anti-smoking aids (Ex. Lozenge, Patch, Anti-smoking pills)

Alcohol

• If you are also gettin some of your teeth pulled out, consumption of alcohol must be avoided, 24 hours prior to the surgery.

Pain

• You must leave the dentures in the mouth for 24 hours after they are inserted. Pain experienced because of the extraction of teeth will not be alleviated by removing the dentures. If you remove the dentures, swelling may occur, and you may be unable to reinsert the dentures.

Swelling

• If several teeth have been extracted, swelling and discomfort are to be expected. Swelling may be reduced by holding ice packs against the face in the area of the extractions for no longer than 15 min/hour/ Take medication as prescribed.

Bleeding

• The dentures will act as a bandage and help to limit bleeding and to prevent breakdown of the blood clots that form in the tooth sockets. Bleeding normally is minimal: however, even a few drops of blood will redden saliva.

Diet

• Your diet for the first 24 hours should be restricted to liquids or soft foods. Gradually, you can increase the substance of your diet as healing progresses to include additional nutrients.

Oral Hygiene

• After the 24-hour appointment, the dentures should be removed for cleaning after meals and at bedtime. Always hold the dentures over the sink partially filled with water. Scrub the tissue surface (underside) of the dentures with cotton gauze, liquid soap, and water. Brush the external surfaces and the teeth of the dentures and, for maximal cleanliness, brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Always keep the dentures wet while they are out of the mouth.

Activity

• Keep physical activities to a minimum immediately following surgery. If you exercise, throbbing or bleeding may occur. If this occurs, you should discontinue exercising.

Cleaning

• Rinse immediately after wearing and let it dry before putting it in a case
• Use liquid dish detergent or hand soap to clean your appliance. A little mild soap plus warm water will do a great cleaning job. While you’re at it, get a brush just for the appliance — because, while it’s fine for plastic, you don’t want to brush your teeth with soap!
• Put a towel in the sink basin when you clean your appliance. Soapy appliances (especially dentures) can be slippery, and can be damaged by dropping — and that’s an expensive mishap.
• Consider investing in an ultrasonic cleaner. These inexpensive countertop devices are an excellent way to get the tiny ridges and crevices of your appliance really clean.

Two to five days after insertion, you should begin removing the dentures at night. Removing the dentures allows small blood vessels to enlarge and provide nourishment to the tissues supporting the dentures.
