What is a dental bridge?
Just as its name indicates, a bridge for teeth is a tool used by dentists to bridge the gap created by a missing tooth. They are made of 1 to 3 resin or porcelain artificial teeth (depending on the gap between teeth). A dental bridge is used to fill in gaps, therefore helping restore your bite, smile and oral health.
A dental bridge is a tooth supported bridge, meaning it is supported by natural teeth or dental implants. Its typical constitution is made of crowns for the natural teeth or implants (which are called abutment teeth), and of false teeth in between those crowns. We call the false teeth pontics.
The most common causes of missing teeth (which would eventually require a dental bridge) are:
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Injury due to sports or other accidents
- Being born with a congenital condition that led to missing teeth since birth
A dental bridge is especially recommended when the gap between teeth has the following negative consequences:
- Speech problems
- Bite problems
- Difficulty to chew
- Pain to your teeth and jaw from the extra stress put on them due to the missing teeth
- Being self-conscious about your smile, impacting self-esteem
- Having additional oral health problems
To get a dental bridge, the teeth on each side of the missing ones have to be healthy.
There are 4 main types of dental bridges available:
- Traditional dental bridges
- Cantilever dental bridges
- Implant-supported dental bridges
- Maryland dental bridges
The choice of dental bridge usually depends on your particular situation. At Trident Smiles Dental, our team of experts will consult with you and map out the best procedure and treatment for your bridge dental work. You then get to enjoy this exclusive treatment pain-free, stress-free and tear-free.
What is the difference between a dental bridge and a dental crown?
While dental bridges and dental crowns are sometimes confused because of their similarity (which is both of them being fixed within your mouth and only taken out by a dentist, as well as both being made from porcelain or resin), the main difference between the two is that a bridge fills a gap between teeth, while a crown is put over an already existing tooth to cover it.
What to expect during your first consultation:
Your first visit at Trident will allow your cosmetic dentist to discuss the desired result you’re looking for. Right after that, an x-ray is necessary so your dentist can assess your treatment plan and show you, through a mock-up, the end-result.
Next Steps:
Step 1: During your first visit, your dentist will reshape the abutment teeth by removing a part of the enamel and dentin, therefore making room for the crown.
Step 2: A mold is created next by taking impressions or a digital scan of your teeth. The mold is used as a model to create your bridge, false teeth and crowns. It will then be sent to the lab to create your bridge. Meanwhile, you will have temporary bridges for teeth to protect the exposed areas in your mouth.
Step 3: Your bridge is now ready. Your dentist will remove the temporary bridge and place the permanent one. Your dentist will then check the bridge and make any adjustment that might be needed to ensure it fits comfortably.
